There are those who are drawn to beauty, and those for whom it becomes a way of seeing the world. Neha Gupta has always been guided by the latter.
Educated in New Delhi, with a background in science and textile and garment construction from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, her early years in fashion cultivated a lasting sensitivity to material, proportion, craftsmanship and form, eventually giving rise to RANIAN, her clothing brand. Design, architecture, literature and music have remained quiet companions to her life, shaping an appreciation for the considered and the enduring.
Her engagement with art began with a fascination for the life behind a work. The psychology of the artist, the circumstances of their time and the experiences that found expression in their work drew her into years of reading, research and collecting. What began as curiosity gradually became a deeper intellectual pursuit, with a particular interest in Indian Modernism and the histories surrounding its artists and movements.
Her enquiry has taken her through museums, archives, libraries and journeys. History, Philosophy and Sufi thought have further shaped her way of looking. She was first a student of the Associated Art Academy, Delhi and is now an Associate.
Collecting has become an intrinsic part of her life and informs her practice of advising collectors and institutions. Her approach brings together research, provenance and an understanding of how a work finds its place within a collection.
